  15.      _s_m_t_r_i_n_g is a tool to examine the state of an FDDI ring.  The default is
  16.      to report once either when _s_m_t_r_i_n_g is interrupted or when it terminates
  17.      after a 60-second timeout.

  19.      The options are:

  21.      ----dddd   Increase the debug level.  Multiple ``d''s increase the level up to
  22.           a maximum of five.
  23.  
  24.      ----pppp   Passive NIF collection.  With this option, _s_m_t_r_i_n_g ``passively''
  25.           collects the NIF frames on the FDDI ring.  Without this option, by
  26.           default, _s_m_t_r_i_n_g collects NIF frames ``actively'' by issuing
  27.           broadcast NIF_REQUEST frames to elicit an NIF_RESPONSE frame from
  28.           FDDI stations and concentrators.

  30.      ----nnnn   Numeric output only.  Does not try to translate the MAC address into
  31.           its symbolic name in the _e_t_h_e_r_s database.

  34.           Continually report FDDI neighbor information every _i_n_t_e_r_v_a_l seconds.

  36.      ----IIII _i_n_t_e_r_f_a_c_e
  37.           Examine the state of an FDDI ring in which _i_n_t_e_r_f_a_c_e is inserted.
  38.           The _i_n_t_e_r_f_a_c_e is a string of the form ``name unit'', for example,
  39.           ``ipg0''.  The default is set to the station's primary interface.

  42.           Change the default timeout from 60 seconds to _t_i_m_e_o_u_t seconds.

  44.      _h_o_s_t The _h_o_s_t can be a FDDI station's MAC address or the symbolic name of
  45.           a FDDI station's  MAC address which can be found in /_e_t_c/_e_t_h_e_r_s or
  46.           the NIS _e_t_h_e_r_s._b_y_n_a_m_e map.  The ring status data will be collected
  47.           by _h_o_s_t . The default is set to ``localhost''.
